Keith Haring (1958–1990) was a US artist heavily influenced by graffiti. In the early 1980s his imaginative chalk drawings in the subways of New York City caught the attention of the American art scene. Haring became an international success with the striking imagery of his unmistakable figures. The very cheerful early renditions were replaced in his later works by more critical social and political statements on topics such as war and exploitation. Keith Haring, who was diagnosed with HIV, used his popularity to promote research on AIDS and on the social consequences of the disease.
