Hard water is caused by excessive levels of calcium and magnesium minerals in the water. Water Softeners utilise what is known as an ion exchange process whereby the hard water is percolated through a specifically manufactured bead shaped resin material. In this process calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions and the water is softened.
